Just Enough

Traveler through Darkness available HERE
By Fierce Dolan

Short stories are an under-appreciated art in post-postmodern literature. It isn't that we don't know how to write them well; rather, we don't know how to honor their brevity. Ironic in a drive-through microwave culture, that, as I often hear readers say they don't enjoy short stories because they aren't long enough. It isn't that they aren't compelling, aren't as well-developed as their longhaul cohorts, or don't accomplish as much in significantly less pages. Short fiction often loses out because we want more.
Enjoying something so much as to want an extra scoop is a great problem to have. I'm curious, though, is it that short stories are too brief, or is there a deeper, more provocative reason that they get under our skin?
I think a well-written short story pushes us to actively participate more in the plot progression, to engage more emotionally and psychologically than most novels do. Without flowery prose to gently seduce us, starkness forces us bare, raw, and receptive to bring more of ourselves to the table, without preamble, without presupposition. As well, they end with us breathless, panting, craving more--because every encounter that truly sates instills deeper want. That's part of what makes them so powerful.
Literarily speaking, with short stories, we have to be ready for the good stuff--juicy, unabashed movement--from the hook, on. Posthaste we get down and dirty, rubbing against exactly what we need right there, between the words, among the undercurrents. For that reason, short stories require faith in the moment, without fretting what comes next. We have to be willing to give ourselves over to that momentum and trust wherever it takes us.
I love short stories. To me they are poetry's deep sigh. I love them so much that throughout my college writing curriculum, I was devoted to perfecting them as my form of choice. That's why I enjoy Decadent's The Edge series. For one, they are sexy as hell, and they bring it, every time.
So yes, the short form requires more of a commitment, a leap of faith. Risk it. Dive into the fling, knowing the foreplay and after-cuddling are on you to provide.

What does “Edge” mean to you?

Buy Acceptance HERE
By Starla Kaye

“Edge” defined in the dictionary as a noun refers to (1) a thin, sharpened side, as of the blade of a cutting instrument; (2) the degree of sharpness of a cutting blade; or (3) a penetrating, incisive quality.

Taking the word a step further and applying it to the stories in The Edge Series, this is how I see them.

First, they take a reader right up to the intense physical and emotional moment between the characters. Second, the reader waits on pins and needles to see exactly what will happen. And lastly, the reader learns how far the characters will go.

In these stories, the characters go right on over the edge. They have the characters testing themselves, aching for something to happen, and finally diving right into what they need/desire/must have.

In my Edge Series story, Acceptance, Chase and Rico are both missing something important in their busy lives. They are so focused on what is expected of them by their respective companies that all personal desires are almost forgotten.

Until they meet in a simple situation and things between them quickly become anything but “simple.” Attraction sparks and they face a flaring of sexual needs and desperation to do something about it. They reach that “edge.” Do they go ahead and move over that intense moment for a brief taste of satisfaction? Do they resist?

Edge stories are highly emotionally based. The characters can pull the readers along a slow roller coaster climb up the hill before racing down the other side. Or they can grab the reader right from the start and pull them to that intense moment the characters are facing and then jerk the reader right on through it along with them.

Acceptance

Buy Acceptance HERE
By Starla Kaye
Sometimes our lives get so crazy busy with commitments that we have to let something fall way back priority wise. It is really sad when that “something” is a romantic relationship.

Chase Barrington and Rico Sanchez are both stuck in that situation…until they meet. But are a few days of nearly out of control sex just a temporary fix to what has been missing in their lives? Or can it lead to something much more fulfilling?

BLURB:
Chase’s hectic life is out of control and romance never seems to work until he meets a sexy Spaniard who tilts the world for a few brief days. Rico must return home to Spain. Chase must accept that, but will acceptance be enough when it comes to waking up alone?

EXCERPT:
Rico yawned, exhaustion catching up with him as well as having sat for too long. “Sorry. It’s been a long day.”
“I apologize for keeping you out so late.” Chase headed for the doorway. “Hopefully you can get some rest before your plane leaves tomorrow.”
Rest wasn’t what appealed to Rico at the moment. His gaze had followed Chase’s taut ass as he walked ahead of him. He’d been thinking all night about what the handsome blond would look like naked. The man had a well-toned body and a confident way of carrying himself that had captured his interest upon meeting.  When they’d shaken hands, something had passed between them. A slight tingling sensation, but more than that. He’d been almost certain Chase had felt the connection as well. It had been a long time since Rico had felt such a powerful attraction and an aching need to take someone.
“Are you all right?” Chase asked, turning to stop and wait for him to catch up.
Pulled from his wandering thoughts, Rico said, “Si. I just have something on my mind.” He drew in a settling breath and forced a smile. “Someone, actually.”
“Someone?” Chase asked, raising one eyebrow.
Interest was there in the man’s expression, in the heat that flashed in the blue eyes. Rico took a chance. “You.”

The History of the Masquerade

Buy The Midnight Masquerade HERE

By Monica Corwin
In the 15th century Carnival season, in Venice, masquerade balls were the social events the royals paraded to. Many would travel far and wide to attend. The influence spread to the whole public of Italy in the 16th century and still usually featured the upper class since they could afford the costumes.
The masquerade trend spread further to Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries and still to England in the 18th century. There are quite a few occurrences of people being assassinated at masked parties. There are still masquerades held in Venice in honor of Carnival every year but a person is required to be in full costume of the time period of the ball and on the guest list. Tickets can run from 400 dollars upwards just to attend.

The Midnight Masquerade was inspired by both good and bad. I thought of the idea after re-reading Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘Masque of the Red Death’. While a masque is more of a pageant or concert then a ball it still had that air of mystery the masked people lend. In addition I wrote this story just after New Year where I attended a ball in Washington DC. Putting both themes together seemed like a logical conclusion.

I hope The Midnight Masquerade transports you to a mysterious and sensual atmosphere and I hope one day you can experience a masquerade for yourself.

Rumored to be the most debauched party of the year on the East coast, The Midnight Masquerade has only two rules: no one leaves and the masks stay on until midnight.
But what kind of trouble can Hannah and two handsome strangers make before midnight?

Excerpt:
Somehow, I’d made it to one of “the boxes” with Ashton Kane, only the mecca of debauchery in the entire country. Ben will never believe this when I tell him. I wished I’d had more to drink then maybe I might be a little smoother, more charming.
He drew me down beside him on the couch and ran a fingertip along the edge of my mask. It only covered my eyes and the top of my nose, but the detail work was exquisite. My whole outfit had been planned around it. Achingly slow, he removed his fingers and put them down in his lap. I stifled a whimper at the loss of that phantom touch.
“You look like someone kicked your puppy.”
I smiled, despite wishing he would return his hands to my face. “I liked that.”
Shifting so his knees aligned with mine, he traced a digit across my bottom lip. I stopped myself from sucking it in. There must have been something in the air because I wanted him, more than I had ever wanted another man. He continued to caress my top lip and my breathing started getting heavy, my panties already wet.
“You like that?” he whispered.
I nodded, not wanting to speak so he wouldn’t stop.
“Where else do you want me to touch you?”
“Anywhere you want.”

Girl’s Night Out

Buy Pajama Party HERE

By Kelli Scott

I don’t have as many Girl’s Nights Out as I should. I think it’s therapeutic to ditch the guys and let your hair down with your gal pals.

I’m normally a bit of a homebody. Case in point—three co-workers of mine quit around the same time. I attended two out of three of the going away parties, much to everyone’s surprise. They probably placed bets that I wouldn’t attend any festivities because I’m the woman who skipped the Christmas party two years in a row and the annual company picnic. I’ve declined church invites and Mary Kay parties. My interactions with co-workers are usually limited to work hours, Facebook and Words With Friends.

So when the disclaimer on my latest short story for The Edge claims to be a work of fiction—it is. I don’t get together with my girlfriends and have pillow fights in my sheer teddy like every guy’s fantasy. Nor do we sit around sipping cocktails and watching porn (well there was that one time, but I was young and it wasn’t my idea and nothing happened). I’ve also never tried out an assortment of sex toys with my besties. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. Or you can simply read about it.

How about you? Do you enjoy a night out with the girls?

Pajama Party blurb:
When longtime friends, Tracy, Ashlin and Dara head to Las Vegas for a mini vacation and a little female bonding, the plan is simple: cut loose, drink a little, dance a lot, gamble and take in a male strip show. Once they’ve checked those activities off their itinerary, the three gals improvise and make a new plan. A pajama party that takes a turn—not for the worse—for the wild. With the help of a bag of sex toys, they put themselves on each other’s to-do list with some unexpected results that might test the bonds of their friendship, changing the dynamics forever.

Pajama Party excerpt:
“Tell us about your new business venture.”
“Me!” Ash’s heart pounded. She shook her head. I wish I’d never mentioned it. Why did Dara, who, by the way, never worked an honest day in her life, have to make a big production out of everything? When Juli’s birthday bash got the ax, the only things left to celebrate were Tracy’s divorce, which struck her as more of a tragedy than a triumph, and Ash’s new job. “It’s…it’s a little…um…a little naughty.”
“I’ll take a dozen,” Dara said. “Whatever it is. Make that two dozen.”
Ash and Tracy both laughed. Dara had a way of setting everyone at ease with her blanket acceptance of…well…everything. Tracy, the queen of suburbia on the other hand, would not be so tolerant.
Ash had no idea how she’d gotten roped into Sexy Siren Solutions after losing her last dull job as a technical writer for procedural manuals. Yes, she had a degree in marketing, minoring in education. And no one, especially her, could argue that she spent much too much spare time masturbating. As a matter of fact, she’d discovered the job opening while perusing the SSS website for a new and more reliable vibrator after the old one bit the dust. Old being a relative term.
“Out with it.” Tracy giggled. “We won’t judge—much.”
Ash squared her shoulders. “I’m the new Marketing Liaison for Sexy Siren Solutions.”
“Whoo hoo!” Dara exclaimed. “Can you get me a friends and family discount on a butt plug?”
“Wait now.” Tracy held her hands up as if Ash were a hungry lioness needing to be reasoned with. “What have you gotten yourself into? What exactly is Sexy Siren Solutions?”
Swallowing a lump in her throat, she knew Tracy wouldn’t be as open-minded as Dara. And her opinion meant the world to Ash. She spent too much time wishing she was single and independent like Juli, married and independent like Dara, or divorced and starting out fresh like Tracy. Being anyone other than her boring self struck her as improvement.
“It’s one of those home dildo parties, right?” Dara high-fived her. “Nice work if you can get it, girl.”
Tracy scowled. “Like Tupperware for nymphomaniacs?”

Exploration…

By Jennifer Labelle

When it comes to short stories I love reading them because it gives me an idea of whether or not I’d like to pursue more from that author. The reason I love writing them, however, is because not only does it give my readers a glimpse of my writing style, it also gives me a chance to explore it.
I write romance, more specifically erotic romance, and with Decadent’s Edge line I get to embrace my erotic writing skills. Practice makes perfect after all, right? At least I hope so. J

In No Strings Attached, Julie and Ryan have both hit a rough patch in their love lives. They’ve got demanding jobs, and decide to turn to the personals for an intriguing encounter, but not before Ryan passes a few tests first…

He slung her over his shoulder and she squealed with laughter while he ran toward the truck. Parked in the shade, it was dark enough to partially hide them from view. He loosened his hold so she could slide to the ground, every mouth watering muscle in his body molding to her along the way. She pulled him close, breast to chest, and he captured her mouth again. His tongue slid across the slit of her lips, savoring her taste before he nipped at her bottom lip. “What do you say we take the edge off a bit?”
“I’m game. What do you have in mind?” Moisture soaked her thong and she became a little breathless with excitement. Ryan’s calloused palms roamed down her sides to the hem of her dress. Gripping it ever so slowly, he pulled it up.
“First, I’m going to get this sexy dress out of the way and check how wet you are for me.” Hard fingers squeezed her ass. “Then I’m going to unzip my pants, lift you so you can wrap those very sexy legs around my waist, and enjoy the tight, wet, warmth of your pussy around my cock while I fuck you fast and hard. I plan to make you come and drown out your cries with my mouth. When we’re both satisfied, then and only then, will we go back to your place and start all over. Only next time we’ll take our time.”
“Damn, that sounds good.” She bit her lip thinking about it. “What if somebody sees us?”
“Doesn’t that make it a more exciting experience? The element of being caught at any moment a turn on?” He grinned. “It’s not likely anyone will notice. I’ll make it look like we’re just two lovers enjoying an innocent embrace. A heated kiss, if you will. Besides, I’m not sure how long this first time will last, which, if I’m being honest won’t be that long at all. I’m so worked up, it’ll be fast and hard, but I promise to make you come at least once before we leave.”

And, in Friends with Benefits, as Collin tries to evade his mother’s meddling ways, his neighbour and good friend Devin helps him to open up and explore his deepest desires...

BLURB:
Collin Harrison is loving life as a bachelor, but can’t convince his meddling mother to back off. To make matters worse, he’s confused by his attraction to his new neighbor, Devin. But Collin has never been with a man before.

“It’s nothing.” Collin sighed. “Or maybe it is. But I’ll figure it out, I guess.”

“My social life has slowed down since I began hanging out with you.” Here we go, breathe, take the plunge and just breathe.
“Gee, thanks.” Devin grimaced. “Way to make a guy feel welcome.”
“I didn’t mean it that way.” He laughed and moved a little closer to him. “I just meant that I’ve had fewer dates recently, that’s all.”
“So you need to get laid.” His friend shrugged. “That sounds simple enough. You don’t need me to help you out with that, do you? I mean….”
Hell, yes, I do. “I guess it is, but my appetites might be changing, and I’m a little unsure about it. It also doesn’t help when you have a mother who likes to meddle. I’ll be hitting thirty soon, and she wants me to settle down.” Collin grimaced before continuing. “I’ve got to love the woman, and so help me God I do, but she’s now got a list of potential candidates.”
“Potential candidates?” Devin’s eyebrows shot up in disbelief. “For a future wife? Well, I’m not sure I can help you there, buddy, but I can get you laid if you want. I know a couple of girls who are pretty open-minded and would help you with your—” He made air quotes with his fingers and grinned. “Appetites. That is of course, if it’s a woman you’re hungry for.” He watched Collin’s reaction to his offer, starting with his face then downward to rest on the boner straining to get out and play.
He blushed. Shit! “Uh….”
Devin licked his lips. “Have you ever had a friend with benefits?”
“Sure, but not in awhile.”
“How about with a man? Have you ever experimented?”
Speechless, and completely turned on, Collin couldn’t form the words to answer. His fantasy was finally within reach, and like a dumbass, he choked. He shook his head no but prayed Devin would continue his pursuit.
“Would you like to?”

It’s All About Interpretation

By Elizabeth Morgan
In my honest opinion, the paranormal genre is probably one of the trickiest genres to write. There are a certain number of supernatural creatures that people favour above the rest, or well, tend to write more than others: vampires, werewolves, angels, demons and witches. With so many books out there featuring these creatures it is plain to see why each author has to put their own spin on them. Naturally, they want to keep these well know beings fresh and interesting for the readers, while at the same time fitting their versions of these beings in to the world they have created and giving them a solid place.

I have read a couple of articles in regard to arguments over the physical side of such creatures. For example, lots of people kicked off about Stephanie Meyer’s vampires sparkling. As a lover of vampires and someone who has read up on them I totally get where everyone is coming from, but why the hell not? Why shouldn’t vampires sparkle? It’s new, and different, and it totally works in the world that she has built. It is Stephanie’s interpretation of vampires.

And that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? Interpretation. There is no wrong or right when it comes to conjuring creatures of myth and magic. It’s fun to see how many different ways these creatures can be created. Its fun to see them in different light, and setting, isn’t it?

I haven’t read every book in the world, and I have only read one book with mermaids in it. So, when I sat down and decided to write On the Rocks, with the intention of sliding a creature from the deep blue sea in there, I had to do some searching for other people’s interpretation of these creatures based on legends.

“The Nixie, like the mermaid, has a fish tail and is bare breasted, but the difference being that she has green skin, hair, and teeth. She can transform herself in to a young woman, or an old woman since she enjoys being on land and nearby communities.”

Alright, I can dig that as one idea for how these creatures may have looked, but for the point and purpose of my story I didn’t want just another longhaired, lushes babe. I wanted something a lot less attractive, and stereotypical. I wanted something a little more like this guy. Oh yeah, now this is the type of creature I wouldn’t want to get up close and personal with, if you know what I mean? ;-P

Some of you may have read that brief description and made up your own version of a Nixie, and now you might be looking at this creepy dude and thinking “no frickin’ way!” But hey, that’s just my interpretation.

There’s a first time for everything!

Buy On the Rocks HERE

by Elizabeth Morgan
On The Rocks is a story that contains many firsts for me. It’s the first short story I have ever written, and the first that is purely erotic. It is my first – of many, I do hope – story to be published with the awesome Decadent Publishing, and the first story I have created with two leading ladies.

I have to admit, I was slightly nervous when I began working on this story. All my books up to now have had a male and a female lead, so it was most unusual for me to get into the mindset of writing two female leads, but I have to say that I found it both refreshing and challenging.

I know many women worry about their male leads being too feminine, or too macho, and quite frankly I personally find that it can be the same struggle when writing women, especially when one of the females needs to take the lead in the relationship. I wanted the right balance in their individual roles, and in their relationship. I wanted everything to be natural, and to fit despite the otherworldly touches laced throughout.

But once I began writing, those details just slid in to place, and as always, worry disappeared the moment the story started to take form.

I have to say that although, On the Rocks is sexy and twisted, I absolutely loved working on it. I had an indecent amount of fun writing it. So much so, that I plan to write another f/f story in the near future.

Interested in winning a copy? All you have to do is leave a comment to this post and on November 8th I will pick a winner with the help of Random.org

Her warm breath skated down my neck causing a shiver to curl around my spine. She straightened then slid her hands through my hair. My eyelids fluttered at the feel of her fingertips stroking over my temples and along my hairline.
   “I saw you watching us.”
I stared at her. “Excuse me?”
“Do you like watching?” She retrieved a few items from the vanity table, twisted two sections of my hair, and pushed the hair clips into place. “It’s all right. You can tell me, Meghan.”
My body tightened at the husky way she said my name. The knot between my legs pulsed under her piercing stare. I had no idea how, or even why she managed to get under my skin, but God, I wanted her.
“I’m not a pervert or anything.”
“I know you’re not.” She slid a chain of small red flowers into the black mass of my hair.
“I just heard a noise. I guess my curiosity got the best of me.” I shifted on my seat. “I’m sorry—”
“Don’t be. I liked you watching.”
My nails dug into my knees as her hands moved down my throat. Her skin like satin—her touch, soft. She ran her fingertips over the top of my breasts.
“I would have asked you to join us, if you hadn’t run.” Her gaze caught mine again while she slid her hand inside my skin-tone bra. “Will you run now, or will you do what we both know you want to do?”

A Friends with Benefits Giveaway

by Jennifer LaBelle

When I first came up with the idea for my new Decadent Edge release ‘Friends with Benefits’ I was treading in new territory. I love the M/M genre, but before now had never ventured into anything other than reading it. And, while I’ve written a bunch of hot M/M scenes into various ménage’s in the past, it was a whole other experience to come up with a believable, yet scorching hot plot for you all between my two characters, Collin and Devin.

My first time writing M/M turned into Collin’s first well...you know, *winks*

So check it out, enjoy the blurb and excerpt below, and leave a comment with your email address’ for a chance to win an e-copy in your choice of format, and don’t forget to buy a copy too. J
